Mrs. Euphemia “Effie” Stern passed away on October 21, 2013. She was born on December 3, 1928 to Alex and Euphemia Scott. She was their second child, her sister who was born in 1926 passed away at birth. The family moved to Moose Jaw in the 1950’s and in 1959 Effie began her career in retail. She was the manager at the Sally Ann Shop for many years and then at Heisman’s, and Joyner’s in the women’s clothing department. She also sold Celebrity Jewelry and Mary Kay over the years. She met her late husband, Melvin Stern at the Ambassador Café in the 1960’s and they were married on June 17, 1965 in Winnipeg, MB where their daughter Cheryl was born on June 3, 1966. In 1980 Mel and Effie opened Mel’s Deli & Diner which they operated until they retired in the early 1990’s. During that time Effie also opened Effie’s Dairy King around the corner from the Deli. She is predeceased by her parents in 1976; her husband; step-son Martin and numerous family members. Effie is survived by her daughter Cheryl; grandson David Stern; cousins Alex Maas, Judy Stanley, and Victoria Scott; and many extended family members. A Tea in Effie’s memory will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall, 268 High Street W., Moose Jaw, on Monday October 28, 2013 at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Effie’s memory can be made to the Moose Jaw Humane Society, Box 1658, Moose Jaw, SK S6H 7K7.
