RODELL PUGH

RODELL PUGH

J. RODELL "Dell" PUGH

Dell passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013, aged 97 1/2. In Mom’s words, she has “tossed the shackles of this life” and moved on. Dell was born to Tom and Janet Hislop (nee Graham) in Nanton, Alberta, on Apr. 27, 1916. The family moved to the Rozilee district near Shellbrook, where they farmed and had their next four children. After her schooling was complete, Dell worked as a valued housekeeper for several families over the years. She worked for Fred Pugh’s parents before she and Fred were married in 1947. He said it was her lemon pie that reeled him in. Dell claimed that it was the egg money from her hens that kept the farm afloat in the early years. Together they raised four children and had many good years on the farm. They travelled some, but seemed happiest at home. Dell loved to garden and cook. She was proud to win a local bread making contest, and years later, a pie contest in Saskatoon. She was always ready to serve visitors a meal or a piece of pie with their coffee. Dell was a capable seamstress and prolific knitter. These skills were passed down the generations. She often sang while she worked, especially on laundry day. If one were to line up all the fruit and vegetables Dell canned over the years it would be a very long line. She made helping with these tasks seem like a privilege. Known only to a few was the fact that Dell could milk a cow faster than most men. She was always concerned for animals and had a very good way with them. Despite much discomfort in her last years, Dell kept her sense of humour right to the end. She was a quiet person, always interested in others, and she loved stories from the farm. She is survived by her four children Linda (Joe) Knight of Honolulu, Harold (Heather) Pugh, Joan Stieb of P.A. and Helen Ambler of Saskatoon. Also survived by her ten special grandchildren; Adyn Kivett Wilmington, N.C., Dallas Pugh of Kauai, HI.,Kelsey (Chris) Bachur of Brooks,AB., Russell Knight (Valerie) of Chicago, Evan (Jenny) Knight Honolulu, Cameron Knight of Portland OR., Glenn and Colleen Ambler both of Saskatoon, Jana Stieb of Saskatoon, Hayley Stieb of Regina. And her eight great grandchildren, Brayden, Luke, Heather, Ty, Cruz, Simon, Alexandra and Dylan. Dell is survived by her sister, Joanne(Anne) Carter of Prince Albert, and sisters-in-law, Marj Hislop, Pearl Pugh and Dorothy Herron. Dell is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces. Dell was predeceased by Fred in 1998, after 50 years of marriage. Also predeceased by her parents and her brothers Bill, Jim and Bob. We wish to thank the Mont St. Joseph staff for their years of wonderful care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mont St. Joseph Foundation,777–28th St E. Prince Albert, SK. S6V 8C2.
