It is with profound sadness that we the family of Frank Smith regret to announce his sudden passing on Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital with his loving family by his side. Although he had been in failing health for some time, his spirit for life was unsurpassed and will live within all who knew him.
Predeceased by his parents and many family members, Dad was born in his beloved Ingonish in 1931 and is survived by his devoted wife, Robena (Lamey) for 59 years; son, Lorne (Mary), Scotchtown; and daughter, Gwen (Rodney) Walsh; cherished granddaughters, Kierra and Abbey, Fredericton.
Dad was a proud, dedicated coal miner for over 40 years, working in Nos. 12, 16, 18, and Lingan collieries for the Cape Breton Development Corporation. He retired as underground mine manager at Lingan Colliery in 1990 due to workplace injuries.
Frank played a key role in the development of figure skating in Nova Scotia, holding many offices including director of the Nova Scotia Figure Skating Section. He was instrumental in the development of the New Waterford Figure Skating Club. Frank and Robena founded the first Boy Scout movement in New Victoria in the early 1950s. Frank was a member of the New Victoria Volunteer Fire Department for over 20 years. The department will assemble an honour guard at his funeral service.
Like his son Lorne, Dad was an avid sports fan, dedicated to the Montreal Canadiens hockey team. He and Lorne travelled to Montreal several times to experience the live game — something they both cherished and talked about often.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, 862-7500. At Frank's request there will be no visitation; cremation has taken place. A funeral mass will be held in the Parish of Saint Leonard, Mt. Carmel Avenue, New Waterford today (Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013) at 10 a.m. with Fr. McDow officiating. Following the service a luncheon will be at the KOC, Plummer Avenue. All are welcome.
The family would like to acknowledge the excellent care Frank received from all the medical professionals, the many doctors, nurses, VON staff and personal caregivers Michele Shupe and Sheila MacIssac. The family would like to express a special thank you to Dr. Ien Oei for the many years of dedicated care.
In respecting Frank’s wishes his ashes will be interned in Ingonish in the summer.
In lieu of flowers donations in Frank’s memory can be made to a charity of one’s choice.
