It is with deep sadness that we must announce the peaceful passing of Florence Mary Smith at the age of 99. Florence passed away at Gables Lodge on Sunday, November 3, 2013 where she had been well cared for the last several years.
Born in River Hebert, NS, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Mary Hashey.
A wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, she only missed her 100th birthday by a few weeks. In her younger days, Florence enjoyed dancing and bingo.
Florence will be missed by her sons, Douglas, William (Dianne), Jack (Pat), and Vincent; daughters, Diane (Fraser) MacLeod, June Perry, Rose Smith (Betty Holmes), Eleanor (Jerry) Borden, and Mary Lewis; many grandchildren, great and great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; as well as best friend Edith Doucette and Lorraine MacDonald.
She was predeceased by her first husband Joseph Smith, common law husband Vincent Martin, sons Robert, Ronald, and Donald; daughter Shirley Canfield, as well as four children in infancy. The last surviving member of her immediate family, she was also predeceased by several brothers and sisters.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Furlong-Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St., Amherst (667-8777) where visitation will take place on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. Parish Prayers will be held at 8:30 pm from the funeral home. Funeral mass will be held on Thursday, November 7, 2013 at 10 am, Father Vernon Driscoll officiating, from the Holy Family Parish, Amherst, NS. Burial will follow in the St. Charles-Nativity Cemetery.
