It is with broken hearts that we, the family of Neil J. Campbell, son of the late Agnes (Holmes) Campbell and Neil D. Campbell announce his passing on Friday November 15, 2013 at the Glace Bay Hospital.
Born in Glace Bay on September 9, 1940, he grew up in Dominion and graduated from MacDonald High School.
Following high school he attended St. Francis Xavier University and graduated in 1962 (BA) 1963 (BEd) and 1982 (MEd).
He was on the board of the Modern Co-op and the St. Anne's Parish Centre and he was a member of Lingan Golf and Country Club for forty years. Neil coached school sports for many years while teaching at MacDonald High. After leaving MacDonald High he ended his career at Glace Bay High retiring in 1998. He was married to the love of his life, Betty (MacDonald) Campbell of Kings Head, Pictou County, for the past 47 years. Upon retirement they enjoyed winters in Florida where they met wonderful friends. Neil loved to golf in the summer and cheer on his beloved Toronto Maple Leafs in the winter. In his later years he greatly enjoyed watching his grandchildren participate in their various activities.
He is survived by his loving wife Betty and his three daughters Janet Campbell (Ken Singleton), Dartmouth; Susan Campbell(Colin Campbell) Glace Bay; and Linda Campbell, Dartmouth. He had five beautiful, cherished grandchildren, Tyler and Kate Singleton, and Will, Alec and Elizabeth Campbell. Neil is also survived by his brothers Harvey (Winnie) Campbell (Dominion), Thomas Holmes (Boston); sister Marie Gordon (New Jersey) and sister in law, Teasie Campbell (Boston); as
well as Betty's brothers and sisters Margaret, John, Donald, Mary, Gus, Roseanne and their spouses with whom he shared lots of laughs and memories. He is also survived by his many nieces and nephews.
Neil was predeceased by his parents, and his brother Greg (Theresa) Boston; his sister Tishie MacPherson and his very special god-daughter, Marcia Fiolek.
Neil was a generous, kind and loving husband, father and grandfather and his family will miss him forever.
Visitation for the late Neil J. Campbell will take place on Monday November 18, 2013 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Curry's Funeral Home with funeral to follow on Tuesday, November 19th at 10 a.m. in St. Anne's Parish, Glace Bay with Rev. Leo Boone officiating.
