ROUSE - Therese Rouse passed away on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at the Shaunavon Hospital & Care Centre in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan. She was born in Gull Lake on June 10, 1926, the youngest child of Elise and Ted Dextraze. From grade school, she moved to Swift Current to complete high school then went to Moose Jaw to teacher’s college. She accepted her first teaching position at the age of seventeen. Some of her students were as old as she was. A challenge, she handled with maturity, grace and easy. On January 10, 1946, she married her long time sweetheart Fred Rouse. They were blessed with four children (the twins) Sandra and Judy, Cheryl and Terry. Image five females in a household with one bathroom: four girls trying to get ready for school and Therese trying to get them fed and out the door. To say the least, the mornings were chaotic. Therese was very involved in the lives of her children and often acted as mentor, coach and referee. Refereeing was one of her big jobs. She ensured that her children were active participants in sports, the Roman Catholic Church, and education. Her heart and soul was focused on nurturing and providing for her family. Therese was a great animal lover. I’m sure that animals could see her generous spirit and compassionate heart. If any animal needed care, attention or a home, she was always there. Her dogs were her absolute favorites. Unconditional love. There was no such thing as a bad dog and there was always room for one more. They touched her very soul and made her life complete. Therese loved her yard. She built rock gardens, grew her own flowers in her green house and planted trees, trees and more trees. She’d sit on the ground and dig up dandelions in the sun with her dogs. She was at peace with the world. Therese was very quick witted and she had a great sense of humor. She had the Dextraze’s charismatic personality, warm, friendly and full of fun. She was a charmer. People loved her for who she was. She was willing to listen to anyone and she made them feel special. She never offered much advice but she encouraged others to talk through their problems and come to their own conclusion. Therese worked extremely hard and never complained about her own challenges. She was a beautiful woman, striking in appearance, and loving from the heart. She was predeceased by husband Fred, daughter Judy Jickling, father and mother Ted and Elise Dextraze, brother Bernard Dextraze, sister Blanche Salt, brothers-in-law James Rouse, Claude Ferris, Harvey Ross, sisters-in-law Hilda Rouse, Mary Dextraze (Bernard), Mary Dextraze (Paul), and Ruby Ross. She is survived by daughters Sandra Larson (Gerald Austin), Cheryl (Everett) Peterson and Terry Amundson, son-in-law Ron Jickling, 9 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren, brother Paul Dextraze, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Bill and Nettie Rouse. We especially thank the staff at Shaunavon Long Term Care, those angels of God who love and cherish our loved ones like their own. They joke, they sing, they laugh, they cry and they care for each and every one of their residents because they know that time is so very precious. They live in the moment because that is all they have. Mom touched the lives of us all, and chose the staff at Long Term Care to be her extended family. What a fantastic group of people that work together to take care of our loved ones. Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, November 25, 2013 at Christ the King R.C. Church in Shaunavon, with Reverend Father John Mock officiating. Interment took place at Trinity Cemetery at Simmie, Saskatchewan. Binkley’s Funeral Service of Shaunavon (www.Binkleys.com) was entrusted with the arrangements.
