Nick Franko passed away peacefully on December 6, 2013 at the age of 85. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jennie, his son David (wife Arlene, children Michael, Larissa, Daniel, Matthew, Amy), and his daughter Joanne (husband Tim Ouellette). He is survived by his brothers John, Stefan (Roma), and his sisters Doris, Vicki (Al), Rose (Bill); his sisters-in-law Irene, Sophie, Helen (Victor), and his brother-in-law Orest; and by his nieces, nephews, and other family members. He is predeceased by his parents Wasyl and Katie, sister Mary and husband Bill; mother and father-in-law Ksenka and Wasyl, brothers-in-law Maurice, John, and sisters-in-law Pauline, Regina. Nick was born and raised on a farm in Theodore, and went to psychiatric nursing school in Weyburn where he met his wife Jennie. They were married in 1951 and moved to Moose Jaw in 1955 where Nick worked as a psychiatric nurse at Valley View Centre until his retirement in 1987. After retirement he kept busy with volunteer activities (church and other community groups), and puttering around the house. He was very proud of keeping a meticulous yard. He was proud of the academic achievements of David and Joanne and the accomplishments of his grandchildren. Nick and Jennie moved to Saskatoon in March of 2011, starting a new phase of their life. Nick’s health began to gradually decline in the past 6 months, and he moved to St. Joseph’s Nursing Home in September of this year. The family wishes to thank the staff of 7th Floor St. Paul’s Hospital, and St. Joseph’s Nursing Home for the care they provided to Nick. The family would especially like to thank the physicians and staff of St. Paul’s Hospital Emergency for their compassion and care of Nick in his final hours. Memorial donations can be made to Musee Ukraina Museum, St. Joseph’s Nursing Home, St. Paul’s Hospital, or a charity of one’s choice. The Prayer Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday December 11th, and the Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday December 12th. Both services will be held at the Chapel at St. Volodymyr’s Villa (3102 Louise Place).
