WELL KNOWN VALLEY RESIDENT PASSES AWAY

Gerald "Gerry" William Milne - 81, of Kentville, succumbed to kidney disease on December 15, 2013 at Evergreen Home for Special Care while surrounded by his children. Born in Kentville on May 6, 1932, he was a son of the late Laurie and Ruth (Green) Milne. His life's work was primarily vehicle sales at Milne's Garage Ltd, New Minas. However, he also operated Gerry's BA service station in west-end Kentville in the 1960's and later managed Liverpool Auto Supplies; he sold vehicles for Lorne Fraser in Kingston, Fundy Ford in Middleton, Evangeline Motors in Coldbrook and, after retirement, proudly served as an ambassador at Milne Court Petro-Canada in New Minas. He was also a highly successful dowser sought by builders and well drillers for his water witching skills. Gerry joined the Scouting Movement in 1946 and dedicated over 38 years to scouting. He became a leader with the 1st New Minas Boy Scout troop in 1953, serving as Scout Master for 15 years. While Scout Master, he chaired the Finance Committee which rebuilt the New Minas Community Hall after it burned down in 1958. He helped introduce winter scout camping in Kings County (at Hidden Valley) and organized Nova Scotia's first bicycle rodeo in 1960. He arranged troop exchange trips with Sudbury, ON and Boston, MA, and established remote scout camps in places such as the Isle of Haute in the Bay of Fundy. He attended the 11th World Scout Jamboree in Greece in 1963, assuming the role of Quarter Master in the Canadian contingent sub-camp. In 1968, he became a scout leader with the Milton-Liverpool troop and then Scout Master for the Mill Village scout troop in 1969. From 1977 to 1992, he served as Cub Master for the 4th Kentville Cub Scout group. He and his wife Pauline hosted seven waterfront summer cub camps at their Aylesford Lake home. Gerry was a Sunday school teacher and young people's group leader with the North Alton Baptist Church during the 1950's. He rejoined the North Alton Baptist Church in the late 1990's, was baptized in 2002 and enjoyed the fellowship of the congregation so much that he became a church trustee and volunteer. His other passions included endless home renovations, raising seven kids, taking in strays (like Paul Bell), maintaining a barnyard full of animals, and entertaining family and friends over bottomless cups of coffee. Gerry was predeceased by his wife, Phyllis (Aalders) in 1977 and second wife, Pauline (Freeman) in 2007. He was also predeceased by siblings Ronald, Lonnie, Shirley (Fraser) and Calvin; nieces Tanya Milne, Mary (Grimm) Butler and Leslie (Barron) Conrad; nephews Brian and Wayne Milne; brothers-in-law Eric, Lewis and Rogers Aalders and Lorne Fraser; sisters-in-law Dot, Ruby and Ann Milne. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his children and their families: Bill (Connie) Milne of Welsford; Joy (Vaughn) Gates of Waterville; Dale (David) Bentley of Somerset; Dupie (John) Milne-Ashton of Aylesford; Lindsay (Cathy) Milne of North Alton; Jeffrey (Charlene) Milne of Kentville; Kevin (Donna) Milne of Coldbrook and honorary son Michael Baker (Bridgewater); grandchildren Amanda (Hunter) Brule, Robin Gates, Steven (Angie) Bentley, Drew (Carolyn) Milne, Coby (Alison) Milne, Terri Lynn Gates, Nick (Jaclyn) Bentley, Scott (Chantal) Milne, JP (Andrea) Ashton, Phil Ashton, Matthew (Karen) Bentley, Justin, Corey, Candace, Lakeisha, Alex, Brenna, Craig, Sydney and Mackenzie Milne; fourteen great-grandchildren and step-grandchildren.
