It is with sadness we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, Catherine E. 'Kay' Rankin, 84, of Patrick Street, Scotchtown, on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital with her loving family by her side.
Born in New Waterford, she was a daughter of the late Angus and Margaret (MacDonald) Cameron and stepmother Katie.
Kay was a member of the former St. Michael's Parish, currently the Parish Church of St. Leonard. Proud of her Cameron roots from Southwest Mabou, Kay truly enjoyed all things celtic, especially listening to Scottish and Cape Breton fiddle music. She also enjoyed a good game of crib but most of all, cherished the time spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving are daughter, Cathy (Ted) Fraser, Dartmouth; sons, Ken 'Sander' (Betty), Port Morien, Bernie (Doreen), Mabou, Daniel (Ivy), Cameron (Karen), Angus (Melanie), all of Scotchtown; sisters, Margaret Cameron, North Sydney, Ann (Gerry) O'Quinn, Timberlea; grandchildren, Amanda (Matthew), Kenny (Kari), Danny (Ashley), Bernie (Ainslie), Holly (Ashley), Darlene (Jason), Tracy (Basil), Jimmy (Gloria), Katie, Cameron, Angus, Stephanie; great-grandchildren, Jacqueline, Callie, Claire, Regan, Brennan, Fiona, Nolan.
Besides her parents and stepmother, Kay was predeceased by her husband Kenneth, sister Mary, brothers Alexander and Wilfred.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, Jan. 7, from 5-8 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration will take place Wednesday, Jan. 8 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Ave., with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Cremation will follow with burial in St. Michael's Cemetery, River Ryan, at a later date.
