Harry James Walker

Harry James Walker, 90 years of age, of Amherst, passed away on Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at the Colchester East Hants Regional Hospital. Dad was born Aug 4, 1923 in Sussex, NB to Burpee Walker & Elizabeth Fraser.
Dad moved to Amherst in 1936 and in 1940 joined the Canadian army, first in the New Brunswick Rangers and later transferred to the 8th Canadian Hussars Tank Regiment. He served overseas from 1941- 1946 in England, Italy & North West Europe, particularly in the liberation of Holland. One of the highlights of his life was returning to Holland for the 50th Anniversary of the liberation.
Dad returned to Canada in 1946 and began working at Dunlap Hardware Ltd. where he began as a truck driver and retired in 1987 after 41 years as retail sales manager and share holder.
He played several sports recreationally and was a member of the Amherst Golf Club, Amherst Curling Club for years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Amherst and was a deacon in his earlier years. In his later years, Dad became active in the Canadian Legion Branch #10.
He enjoyed going to the cottage at the Amherst Shore and loved watching all sports on TV. Dancing was also a hobby and the Sunday "Hootenannies" at the Legion were a special time for him.
Harry is survived by his daughter, Judith Carroll (Allan) of Truro, grandsons, Jordon (Kimberly) of Cross Lake, MB, Matthew of Davenport, Iowa; great granddaughter, Quinn; sister, Millie Haylett of Burlington, ON; step brother in law Charlie Kyle (Kay) of Amherst, step sisters in law, Rita Kyle (Angus) , Cathy Spicer (Darren) both of Sussex, NB, sister in law Phyllis Porter of Lower Sackville, NS; special friend Pauline Dupuis of Amherst; several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, the former Madelyn O'Connell in 2006; sisters, Martha, Hazel, Phyllis; brothers Fred, Willis
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Furlong-Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St., Amherst, N.S. (667-8777). No visitation by request. A memorial service will be held at the Furlong-Jones Funeral Home on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at 2 p.m. Burial will take place in the Northport Cemetery in the spring.
