Florence Jane Johns passed away peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014, in her 90th year at the Cove Guest Home in Sydney.
She was the eldest daughter of five girls born to the late Elizabeth (Ives) and Rod Ferguson.
After raising her family, Florence left Sydney Mines and enrolled in the CNA program at the Nova Scotia Hospital in Dartmouth. She completed the course and obtained her CNA’s, achieving the second highest mark on the provincial exams. She remained a valued employee of the Nova Scotia Hospital for over 20 years. It was during this time she met and married the late Carl Johns and they spend nine and a half happy years together.
Florence is survived by her daughters, Betty (Dennis) Robello of Point Edward, Margie (Walter) Charlesworth of PEI, and her sons, Rod (Linda) Tobin of Ontario, and Ron (Mauda) Tobin of Mira as well as her youngest sister Alice (George) Beckwith of Sydney. She is also survived by her grandchildren whom she loved dearly — Kyle Ferguston, Lisa Tomko, Kelly Charlesworth, Colin Charlesworth, Kenzie (Tobin) Launiere, Katie Tobin, Sean, Derrick and Terri Tobin and, to whom she was “Nanny who made the best cinnamon buns in the world.”
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband and father of her children Bill (the Barber) Tobin, her second husband Carl Johns as well as sisters Mary Moore, Margie Luker and Catherine Jackson.
At Florence’s request, cremation has taken place with Interment to follow at a later date.
Her children would like to thank the caregivers at the Cove Guest Home who cared for their Mom especially in her final week, with the utmost loving care — we could not be more grateful. Should anyone wish to make a donation in Florence’s memory to the Cove Creative Care Unit it would be appreciated.
