It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our husband, father, grandfather and uncle, Patrick Gallivan. Pat passed away on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014, at Celtic Court in Sydney, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Sydney on Aug. 23, 1928, he was the eldest son of the late Thomas and Eva (Fougere) Gallivan.
A master carpenter by trade, he worked for the City of Sydney. In his younger years, Pat traveled the world with the Canadian Merchant Marines. He also worked for the Dominion Coal Company at the International Piers, alongside his father and brother. He was always very proud of his membership in the Canadian Seaman’s Union and later, the United Mine Workers of America, of which, he was recording secretary for Local 7749 for many years. During his retirement, he traveled extensively with his loving wife, Mary. He also took up watercolor painting and was proud to follow his brother by being the featured artist for Pier Scapes in 2008.
Pat will be forever missed by his loving wife of 61 years, Mary (Sajatovich); sons, Gary (Debbie), Sydney, Kevin (Dr. Cathy Adams), Saint John, N.B. and Tom (Maria), Ottawa; daughters, Patricia (Warren) Young, Melbourne, Australia and Colleen (Don) Pettitt, Whitby, Ont. Pat is also survived by his seven grandchildren, whom he loved dearly, Evan and Dylan Young, Charlotte Gallivan, Michael, Vittoria, Thomas and Julia Gallivan, as well as his nephews, Dr. Glenn, Kelly and Tim Gallivan and his sister-in-law, Anna.
Besides his parents, Pat was predeceased by his only brother, Austin “Bud” Gallivan in 2013.
The family would like to take this opportunity to express their sincere gratitude to the fantastic angels at Celtic Court for the wonderful care they gave Pat during his illness. Also, thank you is extended to Dr. Murdock Smith and Dr. Ritter.
There will be no visitation for the late Mr. Gallivan. Upon request, cremation has taken place. A celebration mass will be held at Holy Redeemer Church on Friday 11 a.m., with Rev. Paul Murphy officiating. Following the service, a reception will be held in the church basement. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
“May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields and,
Until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.”
