Tobias McDonald

Date de décès : 21 janvier 2014

(1914-2014): It is with great sadness that we announce the passing at the Caribou Veterans' Pavilion on Tuesday, January 21, 2014, of our wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Tobias Francis McDonald, in his 100th year. Born on June 16, 1914, and educated in Newbridge and at St. Bonaventure's College, he was the last surviving member of the family of Captain William and Mary (Lundrigan) McDonald of Newbridge, Salmonier and was predeceased by his brothers and sisters, John, Agnes, William, Michael, Anna, Agatha, Edgar, Raymond, Gerard and Eugene. It was a fishing heritage and family of which he was most proud. Left to mourn his passing and celebrate his long and active life, are his devoted wife of 70 years, Mary (Power), daughter Maureen (James Dunne), son Toby (Noreen Byrne); cherished grandchildren Andrea (Michael) Sweeney, Kieran (Holly) Dunne, Toby (Vanessa) Dunne, Sarah McDonald (Tak Ishiwata), Mark McDonald and friend Michelle Andrews; and his great-grandchildren: Cian, Ava and Eoin Sweeney and Conall Dunne in whom he took great delight. Toby spent most of his career as brewmaster and general manager of Bennett Brewery and later as a coordinator of the federal program Counseling Assistance to Small Enterprises (CASE). He was a co-owner of CCM Construction Ltd. and founded his own business, McDonald Realties. He achieved life memberships in the Royal Canadian Legion, Knights of Columbus and the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks; he was also active in the Rotary Club, Golden K, St. John's Curling Club and Bally Haly. Until well into his eighties, he volunteered for Meals on Wheels, Daffodil Days, and the Kiwanis Music Festival. Sharp and alert to the day he died, he will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him. Our family wishes to express appreciation to the staff of the Caribou Veterans' Pavilion for the excellent care and attention that was accorded to our father over the past two years. Resting at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road with visitation on Thursday from 2 - 4 & 7 - 9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at Corpus Christi Parish, Waterford Bridge Road on Friday, January 24, 2014 at 9:30 a.m. Cremation and private interment will follow at a later date. Flowers are gratefully accepted or donations in his memory may be made to St. Bonaventure's College Tuition Assistance Program, 2A Bonaventure Avenue, St. John?s, NL A1C 6B3 or to a charity of one's choice.
