Austen Murray

Lieu de naissance : Sydney

Lieu de décès : Sydney Mines
Date de décès : 23 janvier 2014

Austen passed away peacefully on January 23, 2014, overlooking the sea that he loved, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Sydney, he spent his childhood in the bustling little community of Murray, Victoria County.
Later the family moved to North Sydney and from there Austen joined the Canadian navy and served during the Second World War. Upon his return, he bought a small farm in New Campbellton where he met and married the love of his life, Jennie Mae Clarke. She predeceased him in 1982.
Austen became a lobster fisherman fishing out of Kelly’s Cove. Over the years, many family, friends and tourists enjoyed trips to the Bird Islands in his boat. In the off season, he drove a generation of local children to school every day in all weather. In his later years, he also worked as a meticulous house painter.
Austen served his community tirelessly as a member of the group who first brought telephone service to the area, as a volunteer fire ranger and as a persistent voice to improve local road conditions. He served his church as a lay minister and later on the St. James Board of Managers. He was a meek and gentle man always ready to help anyone in need be they neighbor or stranger.
In his retirement years, he kept beautiful flower gardens as a tribute to his late wife. He was often found there in the company of some stray cat who had found a home with him. He loved feeding and identifying song birds and wildlife. All his life he loved reading, especially stories of sailing ships and the sea. He instilled this love of reading in his daughter and they spent many Saturdays travelling to the library for a stack of books.
Austen resided at the Harbourview Veteran’s facility in Sydney Mines for the past seven years. It was a place he came to call home where he had nothing but praise for all the staff as they cared so lovingly for him. He would want all the staff to know that they were like family to him.
Austen is survived by his only daughter, Virginnia (Richard Butts), Leitches Creek. A brother, Ian, Barrie, Ontario. Sister-in-law, Ethel Clarke, New Campbellton. Brother-in-law, William Payne, Virginia Beach, Virginia. Nieces, Kathleen, Moreen, Anna, and Sandra. Nephews, Alan, Colin, David, Paul, Jeffrey, Ron, and Robert.
Besides his wife, he was predeceased by his parents, Austen and Marie (Cowen) Murray, sisters Grace and Anna Marie and brother, Harrington.
There will be no visitation by request. The funeral service celebrating Austen’s life will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at St. James Presbyterian Church, Big Bras d’Or with Rev. Peter MacDonald officiating. Private burial at St. James cemetery will take place at a later date. The family will welcome friends at the church before the service and at a reception following the service.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the animal or children’s charity of choice.
