On Thursday, March 13,2014 at her home in Gardiner Mines, we lost the most important person in our lives – Our Mom.
She was the daughter of the late Stephan and Magdalena (Menduk) Filipowicz, Krasna, Ukraine.
Mom loved to read, and had a vast amount of knowledge tucked inside that cute little white head. She has been referred to as the “silent historian.”
She truly was one of Cape Breton’s top ambassadors. Many years ago she made it her mission to keep her many ex-Caper friends informed about the islands activities. Cape Breton Post never knew they had such a loyal employee.
Her expectations from life were not great, just to be able to live in her own home, and have her family happy.
Left in sadness are her daughter, Betty; sons, Charles, Paul (Barbara), Carl (Alice), and daughter-in-law, Bridget; sister-in-law, Irene Gallant; sister-in-law and best friend Violet MacNeil. Zwarum cousins from Glace Bay; special cousin and close friend, Julie Zwarum-Troicuk. Grandchildren Charlene, Shane, Maurice, Helen, Bonnie, Karen, Caroline, Mark and Ryan; great grandchildren, Logan, Amelie, Colby, Bradly. Jordan.
Mom was predeceased by her husband Charles; son, Morris Edward; and daughter-in-law, Sheila; sister, Sophie (Robert) Stubbert; brother Michael (Helen) Philips. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
A note was found with specific instructions “Don’t forget to thank my good neighbors who watched out for me - especially Theresa Gallant, who became part of the family”
Special thank you to the VON and Home Care workers, Dr. Soussou, and the medical staff at Glace Bay Hospital, 3rd floor. Mom had a great respect and admiration for a very special nurse – Nancy Kuta George. She was truly her guardian angel.
Our family is very grateful for the care and compassion given to our mother, but above all Mom, it was you who was the greatest.
Visitation for Helen will take place on Sunday, March 16, 2014 in the SW Chant & Son Funeral Home Chapel, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney from 6-9 p.m.. Funeral Service will take place on Monday, March 17, 2014 at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating. Interment will be held at a later date in St. James Cemetery, Gardiner Mines.
