Spurgeon S. Conrad (94), well known resident of Port Williams, passed away April 14, 2014 at Evergreen Nursing Home, Kentville. Born at Broad Cove, Lunenburg County, N.S. in 1919, he was the son of the late Russell and Agnes (Crouse) Conrad. He joined the Royal Canadian Army in 1942 and did his basic training in Yarmouth and advanced training at Petawawa, Ont. He was a Sergeant in the Royal Canadian Engineers. He went overseas in 1944, and served in England, France, Belgium and Holland. He returned to Halifax in December 1945 and was discharged in 1946. After returning home from overseas, he was employed by F.W. Robinson, Kentville, as a salesman for John Deere Equipment. In 1969 he along with a partner purchased the John Deere business. He was a member of the Port Williams Volunteer Fire Department for 19 years where he held the position of Deputy Chief for several years and the Fire Chief when he resigned: Director of the Kings Co. E.M.O. organization; life member of The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #074, Wolfville; a life member of the Port Williams and District Lions Club where he was Charter President and received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award (Lions Club International) for Dedicated Humanitarian Services, President of the Port Williams Senior Citizens Club; President of the Kings Co. Seniors Citizens New Horizon Council. He was presented with the Provincial Remarkable Citizens Award for volunteer work, at the Senior Expo, Metro Centre, Halifax, in 1990 by Lieut. Gov. Lloyd Crouse. Member of the Board of Trustees for Port Williams Community Centre, Spurg was also a member of St. John’s Anglican Church, Port Williams, a member of the choir, Church Council and acting Junior & Senior Warden. He is survived by his wife of 71 years Kathleen (Kay) Frost, daughters Sonja (John) McLeod, Mount Denson and Sandra (Walter) Lutz, Port Williams; son Randy (Pam) Conrad, Port Williams; grandchildren Tim McLeod, Florida, Jeff McLeod, Toronto, Kerry McWhinnie, Port Williams, Troy (Melanie) Lutz, Halifax; two step granddaughters Heather Mazur, Bridgewater, Nicole Mazur, Port Williams, two great grandsons, Cody McWhinnie, Port Williams, Unity Taylor-Lutz, Calgary, Kathleen Lutz, Halifax, one sister Kathleen (Kay) Keddy, Berwick and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his sister Frances, grandsons Jason McLeod (infant) Mount Denson; Kevin McLeod, Toronto. There was a combined Royal Canadian Legion Remembrance Service and a Lions Club Memorial Service held at Serenity, Wolfville on Friday, April 18th, 2014, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. A memorial service was held on Saturday, April 19th, 2014, at 2:00 PM at St. John’s Anglican Church, Church Street, Port Williams, with Rev. David Garrett officiating. Family flowers only, by request. Burial will take place at Fox Hill Cemetery, Lower Church Street, Port Williams, at a later date. A reception followed in the church Hall. Donations in memory may be made to St. John’s Anglican Church Port Williams, or to the charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Lindsay Annapolis Valley Funeral Home, Wolfville Chapel, 568 Main Street (542-4656).
