Sr. Mary Frances Keating, 86, died peacefully on May 3, 2014, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in North Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Keating and Mary Ellen Day. In her early years, Sr. Mary was raised with her grandparents Keating and then by her aunt Hilda and uncle Cype Day.
Sr. Mary made her religious profession in the Congregation of Notre Dame on Aug. 24, 1948.
Her many years of service were spent as a dedicated teacher. She taught school in New Glasgow, Montreal, Sydney, New Victoria, Iona and New Castle, N.B. The past several years were spent at Notre Dame Convent, Charlottetown, P.E.I., and the CND Health Care Centre in Sydney.
She was a very prayerful woman. She opened her heart to the numerous persons who came to her, asking for prayers. She was the go to person for prayers throughout the years for many family and friends.
She is survived by her sister, Irene Hollins and family and a sister-in-law, Barbara Keating, U.S.A. She is also survived by the Day cousins with whom she was raised, Ann Marie (Day) Steele, Theresa (Day) Doucette, Bill Day and Genevieve Rankin.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her stepmother, Grace Keating, brother, Tony Keating, uncles, Clancy and Everett Keating, Cype Day and Rev. Joseph Day.
Sister will be fondly remembered by her sisters, family and friends, as a woman of deep prayer, strong faith, genuine warmth, as well as compassion.
Visitation for Sr. Mary will take place at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with prayer vigil at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will take place on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Parish (St. Joseph Church). Internment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
