Lieu de naissance : Glace Bay
Lieu de décès : Sydney
Date de décès : 8 mai 2014
John Bernard ‘Jack’ Campbell of Glace Bay passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on Thursday, May 8, 2014, at the An Cala palliative care unit, Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Edmund and Grace (Burke) Campbell.
Jack was a longtime member of St. John’s Church, Glace Bay. He exemplified Christianity and truly practised the belief that it was far better to give than receive. Jack was a true gentleman and saw goodness in each individual and had the ability to make people believe in themselves; a comforting touch was a natural gift for him. He would often reach out to those in need asking nothing in return. Jack made frequent trips to the correctional centre to lend a helping hand or listening ear.
At one time he belonged to the St. John’s parish council, K of C, the Society of St. Vincent DePaul and he also served as a Eucharistic minister and an altar server for funerals.
In his youth he joined the Canadian Military serving with the Armoured Core, Sixth Division.
In 1984, after 34 years of service, Jack retired from Nova Scotia Power as a control room operator at Seaboard Generating Plant.
He lived life to the fullest and truly enjoyed gardening, bowling, boxing, skating and playing hockey and rugby. He had a great appreciation for music and the miracles of nature. To his family he passed on a great sense of fairness, justice and respect for all people.
Jack is survived by his wife, Rita (Young) (Kublek) Campbell; four daughters, Bernadette Campbell, Florida, Rita Poirier, Indiana, Gwendolyn MacNeil (Blair), Glace Bay, Joan Roach (Jack), Glace Bay; one son, Jack, Glace Bay; one sister, Dolly MacDonald, Dominion and one brother, Ray Campbell (Alice), Sydney Mines.
Jack will be sadly missed by his 12 grandchildren, Joy (Roger), Kiley, Lee, Sylvia, Philip (Leah), Lauren, Andrew, Suzanne (Tony), Joel, Julia, Melissa (Duncan), Michelle (Jon); nine great-grandchildren, Tyler, Blake, Jaden, Sierra, Corey, Olivia, Timonthy James ‘T.J.’, Drew, Jack; sister-in-law, Marje Camus and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Jack was predeceased by his first wife, Winnie Cameron in August of 1980; five sisters, Ethel, Grace, Mame, Nell, Kay and three brothers, Ted, Bill and Gregory.
The funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at 2 p.m. in Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating. Reception to follow in the church hall directly below the church. Interment in St. John’s Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.
As an expression of for sympathy for Jack, memorial donations may be made to the An Cala palliative care unit, CBRH, Sydney or the St. Vincent DePaul Society.
