COTTREAU, James Alfred - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James (Jim) Cottreau, at age 92, on Monday, June 9, 2014, after a short stay at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital following a stroke.
Born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, he was the son of Augustus and Norah (O’Neil) Cottreau. He is survived by a brother, Stanley, Halifax, and also by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers George and Frank and sisters Lorraine and Florence.
James spent his early years working on the Air Force Base in Goose Bay, Labrador, before returning to his hometown, Yarmouth, to retire. Later he enjoyed several trips back to Goose Bay to visit old friends.
He will be fondly remembered as a kind, gentle, considerate person. In his younger years, he enjoyed swimming, horseshoes, target practice and working out on a punching bag. He was also very interested in the family’s genealogy.
James was active right up to his hospital stay. He was frequently seen walking in Yarmouth town and even walking to his old homestead in Kelley’s Cove where in the spring he still planted a small garden. He enjoyed going to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 61 where it has been said that he had a passion for dancing. He will be missed at ‘Tim Horton’s’ where he had been a regular customer over the past several years.
Visitation took place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 13, 2014, at H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth, followed by a memorial service in the Chapel at 1:00 p.m. presided by Father Gerald David. Internment followed after the service in Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery, Yarmouth.
Memorial donations may be made to the SPCA, Yarmouth (donations for cat care as Jim always had a fondness for cats).
