Martina Riordon

RIORDON, MARTINA - 1948 - 2014 - The death of Mary Martha "Martina" Riordon occurred accidentally on June 19 at the Riordon family farm in Pokeshaw, N.B. She was born on Jan. 19, 1948, at the family homestead. The daughter of the late Bernadine (Whelton) and Guy Riordon, Martina spent most of her adult life in Saint John and Pokeshaw. She is survived by four sisters; Christina (Milton) Taylor, Fatima (Paul) Healy, Mary Anne(Allan)Barry, and Sheila Riordon, and four brothers: Patrick (Riba), Guy (Debbie), Gregory (Anne) and John (Shirley). Martina is survived by the following nieces and nephews: Ryan, Conor, Megan, Maura, Matthew, Brendon, Kiera, Tara, Deidre, Shane, Rebecca, Regan, John Michael, Kate, Colin, John Patrick, Barry, Reilly, Shaughnessy, Sinead and Caitlin. Martina is predeceased by an infant sister, Mary Louise. Martina graduated from the Grande Anse High School, and continued her education at St. F.X.(B.A.), and U.N.B. (B.Ed. and M.Ed.). She worked as Family Court Counsellor for the Dept. of Justice in Bathurst, Fredericton and Saint John and then as Guidance Counsellor at Simonds High School in Saint John, from which she retired in 2007. Martina was actively involved in the The Belfast Childrens’ Organization, The Outdoor Enthusiasts’ Club, The Naturalist Club, Retired Teachers of N.B., St. Simon and St. Jude Catholic Women’s League and the Pokeshaw and Black Rock Recreation Centre. Martina had a rich life. She had a great love of sports and enjoyed numerous outdoor activities. Her adventurous spirit and love of travelling, drew Martina to five continents, including Africa and the Antarctic. Travelling and learning were her passion. The Rotary Club of Saint John awarded Martina for her care and success with securing scholarships and bursaries for many students. Recently she was honored with a life membership from The Outdoor Enthusiasts’ Club. She is a charter member and active participant for 25 years. Concerned with the plight of others, Martina gave selflessly of her time and expertise. She was a role model and mentor to many. We will miss her dearly.
Viewing will be at LeGresley's Funeral Home in Grande-Anse, on Monday, June 23 from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm and Tuesday, June 24 from 12 to 2:30pm with funeral Mass at 3pm at the St-Simon & St Jude Catholic Church in Grande-Anse, NB.
