Passed gracefully and peacefully into the arms of our Lord on June 24, 2014.
Rita was born in Glace Bay, N.S. however took special delight in informing anyone she met that she was actually from ‘Bridgeport’, Cape Breton. A parishioner of Immaculate Conception Parish, she grew up in the family home with her mother, Annie Farrell (MacDonald), father, Joseph; her fvie siblings, Audrey, Levenia, Michael, John and Myles with paternal/maternal grandparents close by. She had wonderful childhood memories with them all as well as with her many cousins, especially, Sis MacDonald.
As life should evolve, she danced, learned to drive and started an over 40 year career in telecommunications working with Bell in Toronto and retiring from Maritime Tel &Tel in Sydney, N.S. with a life membership from the Telephone Pioneers of America and Bell Aliant Pioneers. She was predeceased by her husband Fraser Joseph Morrison in 1959 and she raised her only daughter Darlene throughout the years with the love and support of the extended Farrell and Morrison families.
Rita is survived by daughter, Darlene Morrison, Halifax; brother, John Farrell, Toronto; brother-in-law, Leonard Stephenson, Dominion; sisters-in-law, Kay (Joe) MacLellan, Dominion and Marilyn Morrison, Sydney; as well as many nieces and nephews, especially, Joanne (Fred) Gillis, Dominion; Mary Anita (Allen) McCormick, Dominion and Joe (Sherry) Farrell, Albert Bridge, C.B.
Besides her family she had many friends over the years and made many new ones later in life. Special thanks to Charlie for his immeasurable kindness and support, thanks to Jenny, Zita, Jean and Mary MacKeigen for all the phone calls and cards over the past few years, to Mary R. for your hugs and treats and to Elizabeth for those special ‘Queens’ lunch squares. Many thanks to caregivers, Evelyn, Judi and Fern, staff on the Geriatric Unit 9th floor Abbie J. Lane (especially LPN Annie Mae), the PATH Clinic Halifax and especially to Dr. Victoria Mitchell, Halifax.
Rita always enjoyed life and travelling especially to Banff, Alta. and these past few years have been the same, lately attending concerts seeing her ‘favourites’ - Vince Gill, Johnny Reid and Leonard Cohen (although she thought he was a little old ! :-) - she attended her first Gay Pride Parade when she was 82, loved her mini vacations to Moncton, N.B. and Tuesday nights at the movies will never be the same without her!
A Celebration of Life Mass will be held on Friday Aug. 1st. 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, Glace Bay, with reception following in the auditorium for family and friends. Arrangements entrusted to Snow’s Funeral Home, Halifax and cremation has taken place with a private family burial planned.
