Elsie Constance MacLeod

Elsie Constance MacLeod Elsie Constance MacLeod

1921-2014
The death of Elsie MacLeod occurred at her home on Lacewood Drive, Halifax, N.S., on Monday, July 28, 2014, at the age of 93.
Elsie, eldest child of Russell and Maude (Campbell) MacGregor of Montague, P.E.I., graduated from Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown with her teacher’s diploma at the age of 16 and subsequently taught elementary school in Montague for 2 years. She moved on to work for the federal Employment Insurance Commission in Charlottetown and worked there until her marriage in 1946 to Sinclair MacLeod.
Elsie and Sinclair built a home near Charlottetown, in Central Royalty (later Sherwood), and there raised their four children. Elsie was active in the Women’s Institute, in the work of her church (Central Christian in Charlottetown and later Sherwood Church of Christ), and in the lives of her children.
Elsie and Sinclair moved to Halifax in 1967 when Sinclair assumed the position as head of the new regional office of the Public Service Alliance of Canada. When her children finished high school, Elsie returned to work with Employment Canada. In Halifax, Elsie and Sinclair opened their home to many, many friends and friends of friends throughout the Maritimes who needed somewhere to stay -- often because a family member was in hospital. And again, Elsie was active in the life of her church.
With retirement, Elsie and Sinclair were always on the go together -- helping with construction of their children’s houses, helping to build churches, working in the InterChurch Food Bank, visiting family and friends and enjoying the experience of grandchildren. The death of Sinclair in 2005 was a great loss to Elsie but she was determined to continue living in the house that had been their own from the time they arrived in Halifax. This was largely made possible through the loving attention of her wonderful caregivers, Lynn Horton, Helen Mellish and more recently Linda Collins.
Elsie is survived by her sister, Shirley; by her four children: Mary (Gordon Callon), Lee (Cathie), Bruce and Karen (Allen Mazurski); by her grandchildren, Andrew, Colin, Aaron, Kathryn and Micheline and by her great-grandson, Everett. She is also survived by Bruce’s stepdaughters, Sonja, Tanya and LaLena; by numerous step great-grandchildren and by her nephew, Richard MacGregor (son of her brother Donald, deceased.)
A memorial service for Elsie will be held on Wednesday, July 30, at 2 p.m. in the J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Hfx (902-455-0531). Visitation hours will be Tuesday, July 29, at 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to either The Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation or to Maritime Christian College would be appreciated. Interment will take place at Orwell Corner Pioneer Cemetery on Prince Edward Island on Saturday, August 9, 2014, at 2 p.m.
