Passed away suddenly but peacefully at the Carbonear General Hospital, Carbonear, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, on Friday, August 8, 2014, Mr. Arthur Gordon Allen of Bay Roberts, formerly of England, aged 92 years. Leaving with a lifetime of fond memories are his wife Rosemary, daughter Fiona Rushton, son Graham (Deirdre) Allen; grandchildren: Marilla (Alan) Moore, George Rushton and Matthew (Cynthia) Rushton: great-grandchildren: Caleb and Anna Rushton, and a wealth of other relatives and friends in Canada, South Africa, Australia and England. Mr. and Mrs. Allen celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on Tuesday, August 5, 2014, having married in England on August 5, 1944, in the midst of World War II. At that time, Mr. Allen was involved with planning and constructing airfields, while Mrs. Allen taught evacuated war children. As the years unfolded, Mr. Allen maintained his community interest as a volunteer fireman and special constable. The Allens lived on Mersea Island, England where the geography and lifestyle were similar to Bay Roberts, Newfoundland so that when they emigrated to Bay Roberts in 1976, to be with their daughter Fiona, they felt comfortable in their new surroundings, where Mr. Allen became associated with the Architects Guild in St. John's before enjoying a long retirement. Known by all as Gordon, he was a keen "do it yourself" contractor and fitted out the shell of the house that they lived in since the 1980's. He was always working on projects and keen to invent gadgets and find novel solutions to household "DIY" problems as well as being a keen gardener. To honour the Allen family wishes, there will be no visitation nor church funeral service. However, friends and acquaintances are respectfully invited to attend the graveside committal service at St. Matthew's Anglican Cemetery, Bay Roberts on Tuesday, August 12 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Linda Cumby officiating. Flowers are gratefully declined. Those desiring may forward in memoriam donations to Canadian Wildlife Federation.
