It is with sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Walter MacNeil, 87, of Sydney, formerly of New Victoria, on Aug. 22, 2014 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in New Waterford, he was a son of the late Hector and Rebecca (Garland) MacNeil.
Walter was a brick layer by trade and a member of the BACU Brick Layers Union, Local 1, for over 50 years. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving with the Merchant Marines for five years incurring three trips overseas. Walter was an avid sports fan who was very sociable and known to communicate well with all age groups. He truly enjoyed spending time with family and friends and will be missed by all who knew him.
Surviving are his special partner, Theresa Ferguson; daughter, Shirley (Pat), Big Pond; sons, Dennis (Darlene), Athabasca, Alta., Fraser (Susan), Hamilton, Ont., Fred, New Victoria; grandchildren, Tamara, Glen, Shelly, John, Michael, Troy, Mandy, Lori, Lorinda, David, Paula, Bryan, Eric, Vanessa, and Andrew; 18 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Walter was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Besides his parents, Walter was predeceased by his wife, Girlie (Marsh); a son, John; siblings, James, Edward, Raymond, Joe, Bessie, Eddie, John, George, Tom, Annie and Mary and daughter-in-law, Ruth.
Visitation will be held Monday, Aug. 25 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration will take place Tuesday, Aug. 26 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will be in St. Alphonsus Cemetery, Victoria Mines.
