Nickerson - Milledge Watson - age 77, of Summerville, passed away at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital on September 2, 2014. Born February 26, 1937, at Beech Grove Farm in Gavelton, Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late Milledge Frank Nickerson and Frances (Raynard) Nickerson. Milledge served in the Royal Canadian Air force as an avionics technician for 21 years. Stationed for a majority of those years in Greenwood, Nova Scotia. He travelled all over the world and in his later years would often wax nostalgic about his time spent in the air. Whether it was flying over the Arctic on board the Argus or looking down on the Flemish Cap through the windows of a Lancaster as part of Search and Rescue. The Tracker, Neptune, Canso and numerous other aircraft had their stories as well. While in the military, Milledge was very active in Ground Search and Rescue. After retiring from the Air Force, he worked at a number of different jobs, including working again on military aircraft under the employ of IMP group. He also worked for several years for Rowan Drilling as a radio operator, after which he drove a taxi for many years. Throughout a large part of his working life, he supplemented his income by trapping fur. From time to time, he peddled apples or tomatoes from the Valley with the help of his kids or younger brother in Yarmouth and Digby counties and peddled fish from Yarmouth in the Valley. Fishing for kiacks in the Spring and eels in the Fall were mainstays; both of which he enjoyed immensely. As an avid hunter, he provided many wildgame meals for the family over the years. Mil worked and played in the great outdoors and, as such, had a love and respect for it. Thus, it was no great surprise when he helped found the Tusket River Environmental Protection Association (TREPA) in 1986. He served as President of TREPA for many years. In 1986, he was involved in the creation of the Tusket River Gaspereaux Dip Netters Association, and in 1990 was the driving force behind its restructuring. In 1996, he was a co-founder with longtime friend and colleague Pat Patten of the Inter-Tidal Harvesters Association. The primary purpose of both associations being towards the sustainability of the fisheries. Mil is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Elizabeth "Jean" (Van Amburg) Nickerson; sons, Mike, Todd (Gwen), and Tim (Beth), all of Summerville; daughter, Shannon of Halifax; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers Paul (Carol) and Don of Tusket Falls, and sisters Phyl (Al) Hayes and Carol (Gerald) Jacquard of Tusket Falls. There will be no funeral service. However, a memorial service will be held on the bank of the Tusket River when the kiacks run next spring as per his wishes. Donating locally was Mil's preferable way. Thus, the family asks that any donations in Mil's memory be made to TREPA or local charity of choice.
