ATKINSON, Virginia Olive (1931-2014) of Vermont, USA formerly of Stoney Island, NS passed away at the Centre for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington, Vermont on Tuesday, September 16, 2014 after a lengthy illness. Born in Nova Scotia, Canada, she emigrated to Massachusetts and then moved to Wilmington, Vermont in 1955. Born in Stoney Island she was the eldest child of the late Walter and Lorraine (Ross) Atkinson. She is survived by her daughter Karen (Gary) Fisher and grandchildren, Corey, Holly and Trevor as well as six great grandchildren; siblings, Robie (Georgina); Winston (Bueina); Sylvester (late Marjorie); Leo (Patricia); and Joan (late Frank) who all reside in Nova Scotia. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by siblings, Ashford, Marie and twins in infancy; Karen’s father, Charles Quinlan and her cousin Berniece Forbush, with whom she resided and cared for on Forbush Lane, Wilmington. Until health prevented she was a hard-working and caring person who was always there when a helping hand was needed. Caring for farm animals, making hay, gathering firewood, sugar mapling, hunting, fishing were among her many activities until energy was used up at day’s end and then she excelled at crocheting, knitting, rug hooking, patchwork, needlepoint … the list is endless. Many thanks to the Boyd family of East Dover for their care and concern over the years. Cremation has taken place with interment at a later date.
