TRENTON – Barbara Victoria Landry, 83 years, of the Shiretown Nursing Home, formerly of Trenton, passed away Friday, September 19, 2014 at the Aberdeen Hospital.
Born on October 7, 1930, in Brooklyn, Queen’s County, NS, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Marguerite (McLeod) Wheadon.
In 1947, she moved to New Glasgow and worked at the Goodman Company until her marriage to Joseph Landry in 1949. She worked at Thompson and Sutherlands and in 1991 she retired from the federal public service where she worked at the Employment Insurance office in New Glasgow. She volunteered for the Girl Guides of Canada, held office and was a long-standing member of the New Democratic Party, was a founding member of the New Glasgow Co-op Grocery Store, was a member and a Director of the North Nova Branch of the Federal Superannuates National Association, and belonged to Christ the King Roman Catholic Church and the CWL. Barbara loved to read, travel, play cards and enjoyed watching curling, golf and figure skating. She was an exceptional cook and baker, especially well-known for her delicious apple pies and cinnamon rolls. Her children and grandchildren carry on the tradition, making Nanny’s cinnamon rolls for their families and friends.
Mom will be dearly missed by her sister, Clair Patriquin, Summerside, PEI; brother, Ross (Sylvia) Wheadon, Port Medway, NS; sons: Noel, Brian (Nancy) and Michael (Nancy), Dartmouth, NS; Philip (Sherry), Linacy, NS; Ross (Dianne), Caribou Shores, NS; daughter, Theresa Landry, Ottawa, ON; honorary son, Andrew Joyce, Trenton, NS; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph “Joe” Landry, and numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Cremation has taken place. Barbara is resting at the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, 73 High Street, Trenton with visitation on Monday, September 22, 2014 from 6-8 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 23, 2014, at Christ the King Roman Catholic Church, Forge Street, Trenton, with Father Gary MacPherson officiating. Reception to follow in the Church Hall. Burial will be in the St. John the Baptist Cemetery, New Glasgow.
