It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Shelley MacDougall at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital An Cala on Sept. 25, 2014 after a long, courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by her loving family.
Shelley was born on Jan. 26, 1953 in Charlottetown, P.E.I., to Evelyn (Gallant) and the late Frank Gauthier.
Shelley is survived by her loving husband, Lorne and her best friend, daughter, Holly and her fiancé, Matt Oakley. Also left to mourn are sisters, Sandra MacBeath (Rupert), Calgary, Susan Woodward (Ross) and Sharon Ann Martin (Kenny), Charlottetown, P.E.I.; brother, Stephen (Valerie), Truro, N.S.; brother-in-law, Bill Underhay, Prince Edward Island; mother-in-law, Anne MacDougall, Sydney; sister-in-law, Evelyn MacDougall, Halifax, N.S.; brother-in-law, John MacKinnon, Sydney.
Besides her father, she was predeceased by her sister, Sharlene Underhay; daughter, Natalie at birth; father, Frank Gauthier; father-in-law, John MacDougall and sister-in-law, Paula MacKinnon.
Shelley began her teaching career in Charlottetown and ended her career pursuing her joy of teaching adults with the Adult Learning Association of Cape Breton. She was actively involved with the Antigonish Diocese and forged many friendships along the way. Shelley was a founding member of the Cape Breastoners Dragon Boat team. Many a happy moment was spent on the Mira River. In recent years, Shelley pursued her love of writing with the Whitney Writer’s Ink. Shelley’s kind heart always allowed her to put others ahead of herself. Shelley was not only an inspiration to many, but a hero, especially to Lorne and Holly.
Visitation will take place at S.W. Chant Funeral Home on Sunday, Sept. 28, 2014 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Fatima Church on Monday, Sept. 29, 2014 at 11 a.m. Reception to follow in church hall. Private burial at a later date.
Family flowers only. Donations may be made to Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County in Shelley’s memory.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of the An Cala Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital and also Shelley’s “Angels” at the Cancer Centre, in particular Dr. Ron MacCormick.
