LEIGHTON; DARWYN STUART (1943 – 2014) - Mr. Darwyn S. Leighton of Castalia, Grand Manan Island passed away at the Grand Manan Nursing Home on Saturday October 11, 2014. Darwyn was born the son of the late Leonard and Essie (Guthrie) Leighton at North Head. He owned and operated a trucking business on the Island for many years, a propane delivery business, and also a tow truck business. Later he worked for the Department of Transportation and Infastructure as a heavy equipment operator until his retirement. He served as a member of the Grand Manan Fire Department for many years as well. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Elizabeth (Betty) Leighton. Three daughters; Ellen Stanley of Black’s Harbour, Amber Leighton of Grand Manan, and Aleta Leighton of Falmouth, NS. Two sons; Andrew Leighton (Donna), and Jordan Leighton both of Grand Manan. Two brothers-in-law; Mr. Ernest Guthrie, and Mr. Roland Flagg, both of Grand Manan. Four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters; Neola Guthrie, and Flora Flagg.
Visiting will take place at the Immanuel Family Church on Monday, October 13, 2014 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The funeral service will be held from the church on Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at 1:00 pm with Rev. George Clark officiating and Rev. Mark Munn assisting. The interment will follow at the Maple Grove Cemetery. Darwyn’s family has requested that donations may be made to the Grand Manan Nursing Home, Maple Grove Cemetery, or the charity of the donor’s choice.
