AMELIA CARRUTHERS

Amelia passed away suddenly on November 24, 2014 at her home. She was born Wednesday, March 21, 1917, in Denbigh, North Wales, and was proud of her Welsh heritage. Her family emigrated to Canada in 1926 and settled in the Deer Park area. Amelia attended Deer Park school, and then completed grades 9 to 11 by correspondence before going to work at the MacDowell store and post office. It was there she met her future husband Stan Carruthers. She moved to Vancouver in 1942 to work for CP Air in the war effort. She and Stan were married in December of that year before he went overseas. When Stan returned in 1945, they settled in Prince Albert and raised four children. Amelia enjoyed gardening, especially flowers, bird watching, and playing cards. After Stan’s death in 2000, Mom continued to stay active by walking every day. At 95, she decided it was time to move to the Kopera Care Home. Despite breaking both hips just four months apart, she was determined to improve her walking and regain her independence. In the past few weeks, Mom had been feeling very tired and on Monday her journey ended peacefully and quickly. Amelia is survived by her daughters Gladys (Bruce) Goertzen of Prince Albert, and Marg of Saskatoon; her sister Gwen (Pete) Johns of Trail, BC; her son-in-law Leo Gervais; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents Mark and Margaret Roberts; her husband Stanley; her son Edward; her daughter Adele; two brothers and four sisters. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 16 at Scarborough Baptist Church with Pastor Gerry Wortman officiating. Those wishing to make donations in Amelia’s memory may do so to the charity of their choice. Interment will take place at Prince Albert Memorial Gardens. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of Donald M. Moriarty, Funeral Director.
