Ulric Green
GREEN, ULRIC PERSHING - January 4, 1920 – Fairfield, Maine, USA -
November 26, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta - Our family is saddened to announce that Ulric (Rick) Green, 94, of Calgary, AB, died peacefully on November 26th at the Brentwood Care Centre. Born January 4th, 1920, in Fairfield, Maine to parents Elwood Elbridge and Mary Ellen Green, he moved with the family at an early age to Alberta. After finishing high school in Edmonton, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1942 from the University of Alberta. It was WWII so when a job opened up in Ontario, Rick moved to Ottawa where he worked until 1950. Rick met Helen Jean Birch, his loving wife of 56 years, at the sailing club on Dows Lake. Then a new job beckoned and it was in Calgary that Rick and Helen raised their three children. Rick was an adventurous soul with many passions. He had a love of photography, and worked many hours in his basement dark room. He often entered his landscape and portrait photos into amateur competitions, winning several ribbons along the way. Other interests included the Knights of the Round Table, woodworking, attending the symphony and Theatre Calgary. While pursuing a passion for archaeology, Rick traveled to many countries across South America, Europe, Africa and Asia. During his travels he collected many hats and stories which were shared often. As a long-time resident of Calgary, Rick was active in the community. He was a member of the Unitarian Church for over 50 years and served in many volunteer roles. Rick also greatly enjoyed adding his bass voice to the choir; the wine after practice was enjoyed too! The Unitarian community has been very supportive to Rick and the family over the past years and for that we are very thankful. Rick served on the Centennial Park Committee in the 1960’s and the board of the Calgary Memorial Society. In all of these pursuits Rick was always dependable, hard working and thoughtful. He provided well for his family and gave us all a love of travel. We will miss his steady hand, stories and advice. Rick will be sorely missed by his daughter Joanne (Wayne); granddaughters, Erin (Mike) and Julie (Ari); great-grandson Marcel; sister-in-law Marion Hare; brother-in-law Leavert Johnson; and other family members and many friends. He was predeceased by wife Helen, daughter Shelagh, son Roderick, and sisters, Venita in childhood, Velma and Wanda.
A Celebration of Rick’s Life will be held at the Unitarian Church of Calgary (1703 1st Street N.W., Calgary, AB) on Saturday, December 27, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. A reception will follow at the same location. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
