Frances Jean Merry (MacKichan)

Jean MacKichan was born in Cleveland, Cape Breton on August 26, 1926. She was the fifth child born to Christina (Mauger) and Dr. Howard MacKichan. Jean received her early education in Cleveland and then attended Normal College in Truro. She taught school in Bayside and Gabarous and then worked for Acadian Lines in Halifax for several years.
In July of 1954, Jean married Roy Merry. She was a devoted wife and mother and raised three children in their Fairview home. Jean was a member of Fairview United Church for the past sixty years and an active member of the United Church women for many years. She taught Sunday school and was a supporter of church activities.
Jean was particularly fond of camping with Roy and her children. They spent many summer weekends with their camping club in a number of locations in Nova Scotia and was particularly fond of the United church campground in Berwick.
Jean is remembered as a gentle, kind and caring person. She was always ready to help anyone in need with a kind word, a plate of cookies, or a hug. She and her sisters were very close and many a Boxing Day was spent at her home with sisters, brothers, nephews, nieces, children and later grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all her family.
Jean passed away peacefully on Monday, December 15, at the Veterans' Memorial Hospital after two months of hospitalization. She is survived by her husband Roy; her children, Scott (Anne), Keith (Kenda) and Anne (Danny) Grant; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; brothers, James "Jim" (Arlene), and Harold "Archie" MacKichan; sisters, Jessie (Charles) McCurdy, Katherine (Jack) Hutchinson, and Christeen "Chris" (Clint) Russell. She was predeceased by her brother, Ralph (Helen), and her sister, Lillian MacKichan. Jean is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held on Friday, December 19, at 2 p.m. at the Fairview United Church. A reception will be held after the ceremony. Interment at a later date at the Lawrencetown Cemetery, Annapolis County. Family flowers only.
