We, the family of the late Alexander D. MacDonald are deeply saddened to announce his passing on Dec. 31, 2014, in the An Cala unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Daniel D. MacDonald and Leah Frances (Hardy) MacDonald.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was predeceased by his parents, his younger sister Christina, as well as his brother-in-law, Murray O’Hara and great-grandson MacKenzie.
Alex was a veteran of the Second World War. He was a mechanic attached to the 2nd Armored Brigade. He served at Normandy, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He began his working career as an electrician with the department of National Defence in Point Edward Naval Base in 1957. He joined Canadian National Railways and retired in 1985.
A loving husband and father, he is survived by the love of his life for 66 years, his wife, Minnie (O’Hara) MacDonald. Surviving are also his five children, Daniel (Heather), Donna, Eldie, Karen (Paul MacDonald) and Noel (James Cooper). Alex is also survived by nine grandchildren who adored him, 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dad had many interests during his lifetime, some of which he shared with Mom. They both enjoyed fiddle music which led them to learn to play and eventually become members of the Mira Fiddlers. Dad took up violin making and became a member of the order of Violin Makers of Canada. Some of his beautiful violins are being played locally as well as points abroad.
The family requests that anyone wishing to make a donation in memory of dad may donate to the An Cala Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Sunday, Jan. 4, 2014, at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. with a memorial service to follow at 12 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Gilbert Dube officiating.
