Alberta Haddon

HADDON, ALBERTA MATTIE - Alberta Mattie (Carroll) Haddon was born on March 20, 1928 in Nelson Hollow, just up the Miramichi from Doaktown, NB. She was raised in a large family of eight (Carvel, Newton, Hudson, Alberta, Nan (Sgambatti), Georgie (Clark), Guy, and Jimmy). Alberta attended Normal School in Fredericton (now Teachers College), and upon graduation, accepted her first teaching position at Pleasant Ridge, near St Stephen. The following year she upgraded to two room schools in Leonardville and Fairhaven, Deer Island. This proved a fortuitous assignment, where she met and eventually married William "Bill" Haddon, who was also embarking on a teaching career. Alberta’s early married life revolved around her own growing family, eventually comprising six children; first living in a log cabin near Bill’s parents, then moving to St Stephen where Bill taught in the High School for 15 years. A move to Oromocto in 1967 provided a much larger community where both Bill and Alberta contributed greatly through school and church. The family always enjoyed their summer breaks on Deer Island, with Bill for many years working on the water. After Bill died in 1992, Alberta moved back to St Stephen, eventually to Fredericton and then to Oromocto to be near family. Alberta’s sister, Nan, is the last of her siblings, now living in Toronto. Alberta’s younger daughter Arlene (Corbett) died two years ago in Georgia. Her eldest daughter Anne (Lossing) lives in El Remate, Guatemala; Paul in Leduc, AB; Herb in Harvey, NB; Maurice in Medford, MA; and John in Calgary, AB. She was proud of her children, the 14 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren. Alberta moved to Leduc in 2009 with Paul, Debbie and family and for the past two years has resided at Salem Manor Nursing Home in Leduc. She died there on December 27, 2014 with family at her side.
A Remembrance Service will be held at Salem Manor Nursing Home on January 3 at 2:00 pm; to be followed by a Service at the Oromocto Baptist Church in Oromocto, NB on January 10 at 2:00 pm. Burial will take place at Mount Hope Cemetery on Deer Island, NB on January 11 at 2:00 pm, weather dependant. Arrangements in the care of the St. George Funeral Home (755-3533) 26 Portage Street, St. George NB. Online condolences and donations may be made at www.stgeorgefh.ca
