It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we, the family of Joy Delores Elizabeth (Hefford) Rykunyk, announce her death at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney on Jan. 2, 2015 after a brief illness.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Eldred and Margaret (Ritchie) Hefford. She retired from Woolco in 1988 after 13 years. She
was an avid bowler and a member of the Sydney Steelworkers & Pensioners Club.
She was the Toronto Maple Leaf’s greatest fan and we believe she loved to see the Habs lose more than the Leafs win when the two teams met.
She is survived by her son, John (Laura) and daughters, Veronica (Bruce) Mackay and Kathy (Raymond) Monahan, all of Sydney; her grandsons, Devin (Melissa), Steven (Krystle), Michael, Mark (Kaitlain) and Tyler (Alicia); great-granddaughters, Emilie and Gwen Mackay. She is also survived by her sisters, Jean Hiscock, Sydney, Florence (Keel) Burton, North Sydney and brother, Selby, Toronto. Joy is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Joy was predeceased by the love of her life, her husband, Kazimer 'Kaz' Rykunyk; sisters, Lee Lawson, Gladys Grant and Ann Dunphy as well as
brothers, Gordon (Second World War) Eldred, John and George.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2015 from 1-3 p.m. at the SW Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff on 4B and the palliative care for all the care and compassion given to mom during her stay there.
Donations in Joy's memory can be made to the palliative care unit, or to The Salvation Army.
