The death occurred at the QEH on January 19, 2015 of Fern Cross (nee Lea), just days after her 96th birthday.
Fern was raised in Vernon River and left as a young woman to work in Ottawa. There she met the love of her life, John Cross, to whom she was married for 60 years. After decades working in Ottawa, they retired to Georgia, where they could pursue their shared passion of golf, year round. They enjoyed golfing all over North America and had a few memorable golf trips to Scotland. Twenty years ago, they returned home to Prince Edward Island.
Fern is survived by her brother, Forrest Lea (Margaret). Fern will be greatly missed by Island nieces, Myrna Wakelin, Nancy Lea-Cooke and Shelly Lea-Lantz. Also survived by Island nephews, Lorne Lea, Russell Lea, Garth Lea and Paul Lea (Moncton); nieces, Dorothy Fisher, Mary Jane Grant and Glenda Pringle, all of Moncton.
We would like to thank Andrew's of Stratford for their outstanding care during the last two years. They provided a loving home for our dear Fern. We would also like to thank Dr. Jan Rogerson and Dr. Amy MacDonald for their care and compassion. At this time we would also like to thank the exceptional care givers, who have been with Fern around the clock, at the QEH, the past two weeks: Brenda Byrne, Daisey Lee MacDonald, Kayla Comeau, Taylor Anderson, Jessica Keenan and Jocelyn Altass. We felt truly blessed to have Jocelyn singing, "Be Not Afraid," as Fern slipped away. It was very reassuring for the family member present.
Resting at MacLean Funeral Home Swan Chapel. No visiting hours or funeral service by personal request. A private family interment will take place in Vernon River Memorial Cemetery.
