Doris Hanke

Doris Mildred Hanke (June 21, 1923 – January 22, 2015) passed away at the Lucky Lake Health Centre at the age of 91. She was the daughter of Gwen and George McKay (both deceased). Raised and educated in Leask, SK, Doris attended Normal School in Saskatoon and taught for 1 year near Prince Albert. She then went to work in the bank in Beechy, boarding with Max and Betty Peters. In 1947, she married Lloyd Hanke and became a farm wife, living on the home place until they moved into Beechy in 1973. Doris leaves to cherish her memory her sister Phyllis Conzelman (Davis, California); her brother Bruce McKay (Calgary, AB); her sister-in-law Elnora Buness (Outlook, SK); daughter Nancy (Bernie) Hrytzak (Chatham, ON) and family Richard Hrytzak (Kitchener-Waterloo, ON), Christine (Steve) Tuinstra, Kaylin and Taylor (Chatham, ON), Robert (Megan) Hrytzak and Ethan (Windsor, ON); son Glenn (Diana) Hanke (Swift Current, SK) and family Nicole (Charlie) Bear, Shasta, Shayanne, Shallen, and Trinity (Whitewood, SK), Michael (Carlye) Hanke, Jared and Chase McLaughlin, AB), Mathew (Mel) Hanke, McKayla and Carter (Beechy, SK); son Pat (Barb) Hanke and family Allissia (Adam)Smith and Emmett (Beechy, SK) and Brodie Hanke (Beechy,SK); and numerous nieces and nephews. Doris was predeceased by her husband Lloyd (2003), her brother-in-law Hal Buness (2008), her grandson Nicholas Hanke (2006) and her great-grand daughter Addison (2007). Doris was a member of the Jonesville Homemakers Club for 20 years. She was a longtime secretary of the Beechy Ag Society, taking over from Mrs. Meaden. Doris was always interested in Beechy having a library and she became the treasurer of the Beechy Library Board when it formed in 1956 and remained in that position until 2006. She served on the Rink Auxiliary and was an active member of the Beechy United Church both in the Sunday School and choir. Doris cooked many a roast beef in her oven for the Community Hall and knit numerous afghan blankets for community sales. Doris was a staunch supporter of the Saskatchewan Roughriders and she and Lloyd had season tickets for 28 years. Doris and Lloyd were known for their hospitality. The door was always open, the coffee was always on, a meal was always waiting to be shared, and a bed was always ready if needed! A celebration of Doris’ life will be held on Friday, February 6, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at the Beechy United Church with Rev. Michelle Armstrong officiating. Interment will take place in the Beechy Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made to the Wheatland Regional Library, Beechy branch. Arrangements are in care of the Outlook Funeral Chapel.
