Audrey Slade

Audrey Slade

Audrey Agnes Slade
Audrey passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 29, 2015 holding the hand of her husband, Arnold. Audrey was born in Toronto, Ontario on August 13, 1931. She spent her younger years in Toronto and her summers at the family cottage in Sturgeon Lake. She married Arnold Slade on February 13, 1954, and they shared many years of happiness and companionship together. Audrey received her Nursing diploma in Guelph, Ontario in 1953. Nursing and caring for others was a great gift and passion of Audrey’s. She conducted herself in a direct and efficient manner, while also displaying incredible compassion for those in her care. It was her ability to balance these attributes that led her to work in pediatrics. Arnold enjoyed a twenty-five year career with the Canadian Air Force, which moved the family across much of Canada and overseas, until eventual retirement in Saskatoon. Throughout the course of their travels they welcomed five children and encountered many adventures. Being a mother was Audrey’s greatest strength and joy in life. She was an independent and assertive woman who possessed a certain stubbornness that allowed for her spirited demeanor. She also demonstrated an unwavering love and tenderness for those around her. Her heart only continued to grow as she became a grandmother. She was often knitting mittens, sewing dresses, attending sporting functions and teaching the kids how to swim at the lake. Many heads and hands were warmed by her gifts and talents. In retirement, she and Arnold travelled to warm destinations and spent many summers at Lake Diefenbaker where Audrey enjoyed daily swims, bike rides and reading. In Saskatoon she was also an active member within her church group. Throughout her life, Audrey touched many people with her positivity and taught those around her what it meant to be not only a strong woman, but a great person. The impact that she had on those who knew her is invaluable and her legacy will continue to thrive in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be missed dearly by her husband of 61 years, Arnold Slade; children, Phil (Brenda) Slade, Peter (Wanda) Slade, Cathy Slade, and Patrick Slade; grandchildren, Ashley (Derek) Blanch, Marc (Colleen) Slade, Haley Slade, Stephanie (Travis) Slade, Grady Slade, Keenan Slade, Bryson Slade, Kerri Norman-Slade, and Sarah (Cory) Towriss; as well as nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents; Edwin and Marian Pattison; brothers, George and Bud; son, Paul Slade, and granddaughter, Paige Norman. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Misfeldt and the nursing staff at St. Paul’s Hospital for their excellent care of Audrey. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The War Amps of Canada: www.donate.waramps.ca. Arrangements are entrusted to Prairie View Cremation and Memorial Services (306) 242-7884.
