Maxine Cooke Garvie

In Loving Memory of
MAXINE OLIVE COOKE GARVIE
(Nee McDonald)
March 29, 1926 – February 27, 2015
Our beloved mother, Maxine Cooke Garvie, passed away peacefully at Queensway Carleton Hospital in Ottawa, Ontario on the evening of February 27, 2015. She departed this world on her own terms in the company of her four children, Sally, Brad, Duncan and David, and survived by 15 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Maxine was a loving mother and wife, predeceased by both her first husband Dean Cooke and her second husband Lloyd Garvie. She made lifelong friendships wherever she went and will be fondly remembered and missed by all. Maxine was born and grew up in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, graduating from the University of Saskatchewan with a B.A. degree in 1948. After graduation, she worked as a reporter for the Saskatoon Star Phoenix newspaper. Always the adventurer, she travelled to Europe on her own in 1948-49 to tour with the International Student Federation and live in Geneva where she volunteered for the Red Cross. Maxine married her first love Dean in 1950 and left Saskatchewan to live in Quebec, start a journalism career and raise a family but always thought of herself as a prairie girl at heart. She loved people, travel and food and was truly one of the world’s great networkers. Maxine valued relationships above all else and was incredibly connected with all the people she befriended throughout her life. She was the main switchboard for friends and family to stay connected with each other. Maxine was kind and generous to all, devoted to her Christian faith, patient and accepting yet always positive and supportive. She was a strong woman, independent and determined but cooperative and diplomatic, always able to bring out the best in people. First widowed at age 44, she managed to successfully raise her family while advancing her business writing career. Upon retirement in 1991, Maxine fulfilled her love of travel and covered much of three continents with her family, friends and second husband Lloyd. We would like to thank the Royale, Robertson House and Queensway-Carlton hospital for their kind care and support for our mother as her health slowly declined, easing her last years and days. Friends may pay their respects at the
