It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the sudden passing of John Ronald 'Ripper' MacDonald, 80, of New Waterford, N.S., on Sunday, March 8, 2015, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Inverness, he was a son of the late John C. and Catherine MacDonald.
John left New Waterford at a young age and travelled to Ontario where he later became trained and worked as a pipefitter. He applied his trade at various locations throughout Canada and after being away for over 50 years, he relocated to New Waterford in 2009. John loved to walk, sketch and occasionally dance to a good tune. He was very strong in his faith with a kind and gentle demeanor. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Surviving are his nieces and nephews, Cathie, Debbie, Joe, Cathy, John, Kieran, Danny, Michael, and Bernadette; three sisters-in-law Doreen, Mary and Noreen. John was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Besides his parents, John was predeceased by brothers Alex, Danny, John 'Jiggy', and D.A.; sister, Mary Catherine and nephew Jimmy.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2015, at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery at a later date.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Society of Nova Scotia.
