LLEWELLYN, CHARLES
Charles Harris Llewellyn, died peacefully May 5, at the age of 92, at the Northwood Centre in Halifax. He was the only son of William Kennedy and Eva Harriet (Harris) Llewellyn of Summerside, PEI.
During the war he served with the Air Force, moving his young family from PEI, to Oshawa, Ontario. He received an honourable discharge after contracting polio, and returned to the Maritimes. Always an entrepreneur, he was the president and founder of Wandlyn Inns, which he named after his wife, Wanda, from 1956 till his retirement in1996. He built 23 inns and hotels from the Maritimes to Winnipeg. In 1977 he was named the Canadian Hotelier of the year by the Commercial Travellers Association of Canada, at a large ceremony featuring John Diefenbaker as the keynote speaker. He was a long time member of the CAMR in New Brunswick, (now known as the CACL), and in partnership with the Kiwanis Club, built a group home in Fredericton for persons who were intellectually challenged, which he named Norman House, after his third son who had Down Syndrome. He sat on the Board of Regents for Mount Allison University, from1970-1982, serving as Chairman during the final two years. In 1983, he recieved an Honourary Doctor of Laws, LLD, from Mount A. Charlie was also an active member of St. Paul's United Church, in Fredericton, volunteering as the Sunday School Superintendent. In later years he belonged to the Bedford United Church, after he and his wife moved to be close to family in Halifax. He had a passion for life. Enjoyed meeting people and telling stories, loved being on the water sailing, and in younger years, skiing.
He will be missed by his loving wife Wanda (Bradshaw), his sons Grant, (Donna), and Gary, (Carol), his daughter Karen, (Claudy), and six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
His son Norman, predeceased him, (1949-2010), as did his three sisters, Mildred (Olsen), Ruth
(Cannon) and Jean (VanAlstine).
A Celebration of his life will take place on Sunday, May 17, at 2:00, in the Penthouse at the Northwood Center, 2615 Northwood Terrace, led by Rev. David Hart.
