Ethel Blanche Flemming

Ethel Blanche Flemming

Age 92, Halifax. It is with sadness we announce the death of Ethel Blanche (Brehaut) Flemming on April 27, 2015 in QE II Health Sciences Centre.
Born in Murray Harbour, P.E.I., she was the daughter of Lena (Dunn) and Harry Brehaut.
Ethel is survived by dear sisters, Helen (Hirschfeld) and Amy (MacNeill), loving son, Donald (Jane), granddaughter, Hilary, and caring nieces, Helen (John) Whitman, Sandra (Wallace) MacKay, Nancy (Alex) MacBeath, Jackie (Ed) MacNeill-Doiron and Lena (Paul) Baker. Also many fond relatives on her late husband’s side of the family, including Louise (Gerry) Fredericks, who was a devoted friend. She was predeceased by her parents; husband, Bernard (Barney) Roy Flemming; sister, Sarah; and brothers, Elmer, Clarence, Buster and Frank.
Ethel was a member of the Canadian Women’s Army Corps (Signals) in Halifax during WWII, where she worked as a telephone switchboard operator and excelled as a marksman on the corps shooting team. She loved her family and friends, home and knitting, and had a special spot in her heart for all animals, whether on her parents’ farm, as house pets or in the wild (especially chickadees). Always a farm girl at heart, she could never resist a u-pick, and she and her sister, Helen, were often dinged for piling the baskets too high. Their forays into broccoli and rhubarb patches were also legendary. She was always a cheerleader for the endeavours of family and friends, especially her son and granddaughter, celebrating every achievement and milestone.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation at Cruikshank’s Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax, on May 19 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A memorial service will be held in St. Mark’s Anglican Church (corner Russell and Gottingen), Halifax, on May 20, commencing at 2 p.m., reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the SPCA or to the charity of your choice.
Heartfelt thanks to the staff of the QE II cardiac and geriatric recovery units for their excellent care.
