It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend Jean Walsh, 88, on Saturday, May 16, 2015, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, with her family by her side.
Born in Sydney on Jan. 6,1927, she was the daughter of the late John Charles and Mary Emma (Rockwood) Powell.
Jean was a volunteer for many years, she volunteered with the Red Cross Society, Meals on Wheels and the Hospital Auxiliary. Jean was a member of the Baptist United Church, Marion Bridge, the Eastern Star, Queen Elizabeth, chapter 14, Heather's Lodge 124, Framboise, and the Mira Pensioners Club.
She loved life to the fullest, she enjoyed travelling and nature.
Jean is survived by her children, Barry (Janet) Walsh, Cambridge, Ont., Brenda 'Bunny' Walsh (Bob Pyke), Sydney, Arnold (Carol Ann) Walsh, Sydney, Glenn (Barb) Walsh, Reserve Mines, Heather Walsh, Sydney; her precious grandchildren, Olivia, Jason, Melissa, Joey, Victoria 'Vicki', Michelle, Megan and Hayden-Ray; her 10 great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by her sister, Noreen Jackson, Coxheath, as well as several nieces and a nephew.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Ray Walsh, sons, Dennis and Tim Walsh, sister, Dorothy Evans, brother, John R. Powell.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Thursday May 21, 2015, from 7-9 p.m. at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. An Eastern Star service will be held at 7 p.m. in the funeral home. A memorial service will take place 2 p.m. Friday, May 22, 2015, in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating. Reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation of the Palliative Care Society.
