It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of William McCabe, 86 on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at MacGillivary Guest Home.
William was the son of the late William and Mary 'Sally' (Donovan) McCabe.
Bill was a well-educated man, obtaining his BSc and his masters in Chemical Engineering. He was a metallurgist and head of the research team at the Sydney Steel plant for 10 years, then later went on to be a professor at the Coast Guard College, teaching math and science.
He was an avid sailor, and was a member of the Northside Yacht club. He and his son Sean did lots of sailing together. He owned a three mass schooner that he would travel the Mira River with. One of the highlights of his life was traveling to Ingonish with his family. Those trips are still fondly talked about and remembered.
He is survived by his loving wife, Greta (Fidgen); daughters, Kathy (Jay) Fowler, New Jersey, Mary McCabe (Peter Brown), Edmonton; son, Sean (Joanne Frost) Bridgetown. Bill is also survived by sisters, Barbara (Aubery) Cameron, Glace Bay and Jerry, Sydney, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter, Margaret 'Maggie' Costello; brother, Joseph and sister, Sheila.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2015 from 1-2 p.m. in the SW Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, with a memorial service to follow at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating. Reception to follow.
