Mary Elizabeth Morrison of Goose Cove, Victoria Co., passed away on May 21, 2015, at age 65.
She was the daughter of the late Rev. Allister and Margaret Morrison of Truro, and was born on Sept. 21, 1949.
She will be greatly missed by her partner of many years, Stanley Knowles, as well as by her sisters, Barbara Johnston (Brian) of Mississauga, Ont,, and Helen Fielding (David) of Vancouver, B.C., and her sister-in-law, Carol Morrison of Truro, widow of her late brother, Harvey, and by Stanley’s extended Knowles family. Mary was also loved by her many nieces and nephews in Ontario and British Columbia.
In the six years that Mary and Stan lived in Goose Cove, they have become part of that community and of Ephraim Scott Presbyterian Church in South Haven.
Mary was born in New Glasgow, attended school in Truro, and graduated in English and psychology from Acadia University in Wolfville. After graduation, Mary moved to Ontario, and spent the next 30 years with the Department of Correctional Services in that province, becoming deputy warden of the Ontario Correctional Institute in Brampton until her retirement in 2003. She also worked in support of the families of offenders and prisoners. During that period, she and Stan met and forged their unbreakable relationship.
In 2009, Mary and Stan decided to do their retiring in Cape Breton, where they bought land and built a home for themselves and their dog, Marty, in Goose Cove, enjoying the magnificent view over St. Anns Bay to Rockyside, and generally made themselves indispensable in their community. Mary was very proud of her Scottish heritage and played an active role in the issues of the region, including those of the Pioneer Cemetery, the Gaelic College, the Stewards of St. Anns Harbour Association, and the David Livingston AMS Society.
The funeral to honour Mary’s life will be held on Friday, May 29, at Ephraim Scott Presbyterian Church in South Haven at 2 p.m. with Rev. Brian D. MacLeod officiating. Burial will take place at Harbourview Cemetery in South Haven following the service, after which a reception will be held at the South Haven Community Hall.
In Mary’s memory, donations may be made to Ephraim Scott Presbyterian Church, Tim Hortons to help send a kid to camp, adopt a dog, or plant a tree.
Funeral under the care and direction of MacAskill Funeral Home, Baddeck N.S.
