At Kings County Memorial Hospital early Thursday morning of Gerrit Visser of Orwell Cove, age 77 Years. Predeceased by his beloved wife, Fim. Dear father and father-in-law of Rita and Randy (Vancouver, B.C.); William and Elisabeth (Orwell Cove); Robert and Michele (Winnipeg, Man.);Eddy and Kelly (Abbotsford, B.C.); Christina and Ed (Guelph, Ont.); and Randy and Jennifer (Orwell Cove). Lovingly remembered by his grandchildren: Matthew, Renae, Tim and Luc Parizeau; Ben, Mitchell, Jessica, Christena and Sarah Visser; Joey and Micah Visser; Garret, Danielle and Charlie Visser; Maria, Joshua, Nico, Kyle and Ellie Tenyenhuis, Monique, Katelyn, Emma, Keira and Erik Visser and also by his loving caregiver, Debbie Walker. Survived by brothers Menno (Catherine), Nico, Leo (Alice), Jacob (Gonda), Dick (Barbara) and sisters Anna, Gerrie, Helen (Jake), Tina (Gerrit), and Frances, and numerous nieces and nephews in Canada. Predeceased by his parents, William and Dorothy Visser, brother-in-law Gerrit Kamphuis and sister-in-law Jannie Visser. Survived by brother-in-law Henk (Boukje), sisters-in-law Griet (Wiebe), Pietje (Geert), Dirkje, Teikje and Geertje and numerous nieces and nephews living in the Netherlands. Predeceased by parents-in-law Jelle and Hinke Hoogland, and siblings-in-law Siets, Jolle, Jan, Wouter, Beeuw and Sieberen. Gerrit was born in Holland on April 12, 1931, and immigrated to Canada with his parents and siblings in 1954. He then went to work in Ontario and found his future wife there. He returned to P.E.I. to farm in Orwell Cove and married Fim Hoogland in 1960. Together, they had six children. He was a hard worker, a dedicated husband and father, an active member of his church and farming communities. He farmed dairy and hogs, then started the potato business in 1981. He was innovative and enjoyed making his own machinery. He served on various agriculture committees and church committees. Due to health issues, he was forced to slow down and give up physical work early, but kept his keen business sense and taught himself how to use a computer, took up woodworking and taking pictures of sunsets. He always had a heart for mentoring young adults, and got involve with jail ministry and young adult Bible studies. He kept busy with these things until four years ago when his memory started failing him. He deeply loved his wife Fim who passed away October 12, 2007. Resting at Hillsboro Funeral Home, 2 Hollis Ave., Stratford, for visitation on Monday, February 2, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at Christian Reformed Church, Charlottetown, Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at 2:30 p.m. with Pastor Chad VanderValk officiating. Interment will take place in Orwell Corner Cemetery at 1 p.m. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations to P.E.I. Right to Life Association would be appreciated.
