With heartfelt sadness we announce the sudden death of our mother, Genevieve Dalton (93) of Sydney. She passed away in her sleep at her family home on Tuesday, June 16, 2015 with family members nearby.
Born in Sydney, Genevieve grew up in Whitney Pier. She was a daughter of Joseph and Mary Ann (MacKillop) Black and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Genevieve always showed strong love and support for her family. She enjoyed her many friends and relatives and was always pleased and very welcoming when someone arrived at the family home. It wasn’t long after that the teapot was brewing and with the always ready assistance from her daughter Eileen, Genny’s delicious bake goods were presented. She loved to bake with her specialty being apple pie, date squares, varieties of cookies and of course, tea biscuits. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed making delicious meals that were always appreciated by her family, friends and visitors to the home. Gen was full of fun and laughter; something many of her home care workers experienced daily. With a wonderful sense of humour, she liked a good joke and often a nicely played prank. She enjoyed card games with family and friends. Crazy eights was a favourite and she had a competitive spirit but the joy of playing was most important to her. She loved music and art and showed her creativity often with drawings and paintings. In her younger years she enjoyed her gardening and loved the variety of flowers that made the day so bright. Gen was very active with the many visitors to the family home and daily calls from family and friends that she truly enjoyed. She will be missed by the many who have come to know her.
Gen had a strong attachment to Whitney Pier and Holy Redeemer Church. She attended school there and was baptized, received her confirmation and married at Holy Redeemer.
She is survived by daughters, Ronalda McDonald (Robert) Edmonton, Mary Lowes (Peter) Lower Sackville, Margaret Goldie (Brian) Greenwood, Eileen, Sydney, Pauline Spinney (Allen), Annapolis Royal, Gwendolyn Chisholm, Edmonton, Monica Syms (Adrian), Edmonton and sons, Albert (Madeleine), Pembroke, Charles (Rose), Edmonton, Anthony (Michelle), Sydney River and John (Laura), Whitney Pier. Mom is survived by 19 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Albert in 1995. She was also predeceased by three children, Paul Douglas, Waneta Elizabeth and a daughter, Laura Lee in infancy.
Genevieve was predeceased by brothers, Roderick, Francis, Neil, James, Anthony, Herbert and Terrance and her sisters, Anne Hawrylak (Joseph), Sydney, Bernadette MacDougall (Lawrence), Dorchester, Mass. and Catherine 'Kitty' Curnan (James), New Haven, Connecticut.
Visitation will be held at 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday, June 19th at the SW Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. Funeral mass will be at Holy Redeemer Church, Victoria Road, Sydney at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 20th officiated by Reverend Paul Murphy. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery.
The family would like to thank Dr. Susan MacLeod, City Homemakers, VON, CBRH and EMS for their care and attention to our mother.
In lieu of flowers a donation to Loaves and Fishes in her memory would be much appreciated.
