Shirley Beatrice MacRae (MacDonald)

Shirley Beatrice MacRae (MacDonald)

Shirley Beatrice MacRae (MacDonald), 87 years old, of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, passed away with her family by her side on August 16, 2015 at the Dartmouth General Hospital.
Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on April 15, 1928 to the late Emmet and Theresa (Durant) MacDonald who moved their young growing family back to Charlottetown. Shirley told us stories of wonderful, happy times spent with family and friends.
Shirley began her early education at the Prince of Wales College, where she graduated from, and then entered into the nurses training program at the Charlottetown Hospital and earned her diploma as a Registered Nurse in 1949. In October 1951, Shirley married, drummer, the late Warren W. MacRae in Charlottetown, and soon they began their family. Due to Warren's work demands (as the drummer for Don Messer and the Islanders), they packed up their three small children and moved to Dartmouth, N.S., where they built a home to raise their family that eventually grew to five children.
Shirley enjoyed baking (special folks would get butterscotch pies), knitting, and was skilled at quilting, making many beautiful designs. In her younger years Shirley enjoyed bowling and road trips to P.E.I. Shirley enjoyed travelling with Warren (until he passed in '87) and continued to explore the world with many friends and made many more wherever she visited.
Predeceased by her husband, Warren MacRae, her parents, and siblings, Vernita, Gloria, Helen, Marilyn and David.
Shirley will be deeply missed by her children: Marilyn (Edward) Fitzgerald, Dartmouth, N.S.; William (AnnMarie), Lockeport, N.S.; John, Fort McMurray, AB; Aileen (Crispin) Hoar, Dartmouth, N.S.; and Susan, Dartmouth, N.S. Shirley often called her brothers, Kenneth (Anne), Stratford, P.E.I., Wayne (Patricia), Summerdale, AB, and brothers-in-law, James Pastorelli, Kennebunkport, ME, and Reid McKenna, Charlottetown, P.E.I., to stay up-to-date on their families' news. "Nana" will be lovingly remembered by her 12 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank the many health care professionals who took excellent care of Shirley while in the Dartmouth General Hospital, during her extended stays this year. To her many friends who have sent their Love and Prayers for Mom, she felt them.
A Celebration of Shirley's life will be held in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main Street, Dartmouth, on Monday, August 24, 2015 at 10 a.m., with a reception to follow. As per her wishes, interment will be a private family ceremony at graveside.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice or the Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation.
