Karoline Ellerbrok passed away peacefully surrounded by family August 26, 2015 at the Seaview Manor in Glace Bay at the age of 100. Lena, as she was known to friends, was born in Landesbergen, Germany, April 2, 1915. She was the only daughter of Karoline and Heinrich Graue and was predeceased by both parents; her brother, Heinrich and a stepdaughter, Sigrid.
Educated in Horticulture in Germany, Lena passionately continued in the family tradition of growing ornamentals and flowers, managing both the nursery and greenhouses. In 1954, she immigrated to Canada and married her beloved Bill. Settling in Sydney River, together they raised a family and built a business that created the foundation of landscape horticulture and architecture in Cape Breton
Lena’s favourite place was in her gardens, gardens that she created, tended and generously shared with all who appreciated them.
Lena is survived by her daughter, Monica; sons, Gary (Debbie) and Rick (Mary); stepdaughter, Ariane (Phillip); grandchildren, Ariane, Candice and Brittany Ellerbrok; Bhreagh, Kierstin and Sebastian Ellerbrok and Christine (Sidney) LeVatte and David (Kelly) Stenhouse and great-grandchildren, Christian and Maddison LeVatte, Allison and Jack Stenhouse, and Bhreagh (Nick) Boon as well as their son Jaxon.
Visitation will be held 1 p.m. Sunday in the SW Chant & Son Funeral Home, where a memorial service will take place at 2 p.m.
Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of N.S. or the Canadian Diabetes Association.
