Sister Peter Claver McNeary, 95, formerly Stella Margaret McNeary, a Sister of St. Martha of Antigonish, died at Bethany Motherhouse on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015. She was in the 61st year of her religious life.
Born in Canso, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Mary Elizabeth (Maney) McNeary.
Before entering the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Martha, Stella was an RN graduate of St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing, Glace Bay, N.S., had received a BSC in Nursing from St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, N.S., and a certificate in Public Health Nursing, McGill University, Montreal, Que. Her 11 years of experience in the nursing profession included: staff nurse at St. Rita Hospital, Sydney, staff duty with the Canadian Army Medical Corps in Debert and Montreal, nurse-in-charge, Red Cross Outpost Hospital, Neil’s Harbour, and Public Health Nurse, Guysborough County.
Stella entered the Sisters of St. Martha on Aug. 15, 1952, pronounced first vows on Aug. 15, 1954 (received her religious name Sister Peter Claver), and pronounced final vows on Aug. 15, 1957. As a sister, she continued her nursing ministry: nine years at St. Martha’s Hospital, Antigonish, and three years at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Glace Bay. Sr. Peter Claver was on the nursing faculty at St. Francis Xavier University for four years. She graduated with her MSC in Nursing from Boston University in 1970. Sr. Peter Claver achieved her Diploma in Pastoral Clinical Education in 1978 from Andover Newton Theology Center, Mass. With this certification she spent the next 18 years in pastoral care departments at St. Martha’s Hospital and St. John’s Hospital, Lowell, Mass. Sr. Peter Claver retired to Bethany in 2004 where she continued her ministry of spiritual support.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by one brother, Joseph Leo, and one sister, Mary Hanlon.
She is survived by her beloved family, her nephew Jim’s wife, Maria, their sons, Patrick, Julian, Michael and daughter, Gimena.
A woman of vibrant faith, Sr. Peter will be fondly remembered as an unassuming mentor with a unique skill to create comic relief at home and in the workplace. A gentle, compassionate presence was the hallmark of her service.
The remains will be resting at Bethany, beginning on Thursday, Sept. 10, 2015 at 1:15 p.m. A Celebration of Vigil will be held on the same evening at 7:30 p.m. Liturgy of Christian burial will take place on Friday, Sept. 11, 2015 at 2 p.m., Bethany Chapel.
